thr was onc a child, and h strolld about a good dal, and thought of a numbr of things. h had a sistr, who was a child too, and his constant companion. ths two usd to wondr all day long. thy wondrd at th bauty of th flowrs; thy wondrd at th hight and blunss of th sky; thy wondrd at th dpth of th bright watr; thy wondrd at th goodnss and th powr of god who mad th lovly world.thy usd to say to on anothr, somtims, supposing all th childrn upon arth wr to di, would th flowrs, and th watr, and th sky b sorry? thy blivd thy would b sorry. for, said thy, th buds ar th childrn of th flowrs, and th littl playful strams that gambol down th hill-sids ar th childrn of th watr; and th smallst bright spcks playing at hid and sk in th sky all night, must surly b th childrn of th stars; and thy would all b grivd to s thir playmats, th childrn of mn, no mor.thr was on clar shining star that usd to com out in th sky bfor th rst, nar th church spir, abov th gravs. it was largr and mor bautiful, thy thought, than all th othrs, and vry night thy watchd for it, standing hand in hand at a window. whovr saw it first crid out, "i s th star!" and oftn thy crid out both togthr, knowing so wll whn it would ris, and whr. so thy grw to b such frinds with it, that, bfor lying down in thir bds, thy always lookd out onc again, to bid it good-night; and whn thy wr turning round to slp, thy usd to say, "god blss th star!"but whil sh was still vry young, oh vry, vry young, th sistr droopd, and cam to b so wak that sh could no longr stand in th window at night; and thn th child lookd sadly out by himslf, and whn h saw th star, turnd round and said to th patint pal fac on th bd, "i s th star!" and thn a smil would com upon th fac, and a littl wak voic usd to say, "god blss my brothr and th star!"and so th tim cam all too soon! whn th child lookd out alon, and whn thr was no fac on th bd; and whn thr was a littl grav among th gravs, not thr bfor; and whn th star mad long rays down toward him, as h saw it through his tars.now, ths rays wr so bright, and thy smd to mak such a shining way from arth to havn, that whn th child wnt to his solitary bd, h dramd about th star; and dramd that, lying whr h was, h saw a train of popl takn up that sparkling road by angls. and th star, opning, showd him a grat world of light, whr many mor such angls waitd to rciv thm.all ths angls, who wr waiting, turnd thir baming ys upon th popl who wr carrid up into th star; and som cam out from th long rows in which thy stood, and fll upon th popl's ncks, and kissd thm tndrly, and wnt away with thm down avnus of light, and wr so happy in thir company, that lying in his bd h wpt for joy.but, thr wr many angls who did not go with thm, and among thm on h knw. th patint fac that onc had lain upon th bd was glorifid and radiant, but his hart found out his sistr among all th host.his sistr's angl lingrd nar th ntranc of th star, and said to th ladr among thos who had brought th popl thithr:"is my brothr com?"and h said "no."sh was turning hopfully away, whn th child strtchd out his arms, and crid, "o, sistr, i am hr! tak m!" and thn sh turnd hr baming ys upon him, and it was night; and th star was shining into th room, making long rays down towards him as h saw it through his tars.from that hour forth, th child lookd out upon th star as on th hom h was to go to, whn his tim should com; and h thought that h did not blong to th arth alon, but to th star too, bcaus of his sistr's angl gon bfor.thr was a baby born to b a brothr to th child; and whil h was so littl that h nvr yt had spokn word h strtchd his tiny form out on his bd, and did.again th child dramd of th opn star, and of th company of angls, and th train of popl, and th rows of angls with thir baming ys all turnd upon thos popl's facs.said his sistr's angl to th ladr:"is my brothr com?"and h said "not that on, but anothr."as th child bhld his brothr's angl in hr arms, h crid, "o, sistr, i am hr! tak m!" and sh turnd and smild upon him, and th star was shining.h grw to b a young man, and was busy at his books whn an old srvant cam to him and said:"thy mothr is no mor. i bring hr blssing on hr darling son!"again at night h saw th star, and all that formr company. said his sistr's angl to th ladr:"is my brothr com?"and h said, "thy mothr!"a mighty cry of joy wnt forth through all th star, bcaus th mothr was runitd to hr two childrn. and h strtchd out his arms and crid, "o, mothr, sistr, and brothr, i am hr! tak m!" and thy answrd him, "not yt," and th star was shining.h grw to b a man, whos hair was turning gray, and h was sitting in his chair by th firsid, havy with grif, and with his fac bdwd with tars, whn th star opnd onc again.said his sistr's angl to th ladr: "is my brothr com?"and h said, "nay, but his maidn daughtr."and th man who had bn th child saw his daughtr, nwly lost to him, a clstial cratur among thos thr, and h said, "my daughtr's had is on my sistr's bosom, and hr arm is around my mothr's nck, and at hr ft thr is th baby of old tim, and i can bar th parting from hr, god b praisd!"and th star was shining.thus th child cam to b an old man, and his onc smooth fac was wrinkld, and his stps wr slow and fbl, and his back was bnt. and on night as h lay upon his bd, his childrn standing round, h crid, as h had crid so long ago:"i s th star!"thy whisprd on to anothr, "h is dying."and h said, "i am. my ag is falling from m lik a garmnt, and i mov towards th star as a child. and o, my fathr, now i thank th that it has so oftn opnd, to rciv thos dar ons who await m!"and th star was shining, and it shins upon his grav.
